The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Baby for Every UK Season in Organic Comfort

The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Baby for Every UK Season in Organic Comfort

Dressing a baby in the UK can feel like a sport in itself. The forecast changes by the hour and what starts as a sunny morning can end in drizzle. When you care about comfort, breathability and style, the challenge is even greater. Organic fabrics add another layer of benefit, they’re kind to skin, easy to layer and last longer, but you still need to know how to use them through the year.

Over the last few years, we’ve dressed Darcey and Freya through heatwaves, freezing winds and a lot of in-between weather. This guide is everything we’ve learned about keeping babies comfortable in all four UK seasons, without overbuying or stressing every time the clouds change.

Summer Comfort

UK summers can be tricky, not because of constant heat, but because those hot days now feel more intense than ever. Finding clothes that keep little ones cool while protecting them from the sun is key. On those blistering days, I reach for loose, breathable outfits and a bucket hat.

One summer’s day, we hit 32 degrees and I learned the hard way that thin straps alone aren’t enough, Darcey’s shoulders caught the sun during a short walk. Now, a short-sleeve organic tee is my base, even in the heat.

My summer staples:

  • Short-sleeve organic T-shirt to cover shoulders

  • Sleeveless dungarees (worn alone or with a tee)

  • Soft organic shorts

  • Bucket hat with a wide brim

  • Factor 50 suncream for older babies (under 6 months should be kept in the shade)

Wet Weather Essentials

Rain is part of UK life, and we’ve had plenty of days walking Dexter in drizzle while the girls splash in puddles. Wellies are non-negotiable, it’s impossible to stop a two or three-year-old from jumping in. The trick is to stay dry without adding too much bulk.

Light rain macs are my go-to. They roll into almost nothing and stop the wet-hair-and-tears scenario. I also keep small umbrellas in our hallway, the girls love the “responsibility” of carrying them, at least for a few minutes.

Rainy day kit:

  • Lightweight waterproof rain mac

  • Wellies that are easy to pull on

  • Beanie for chilly mornings

  • Organic cotton base layers to keep skin breathing

All-Year-Round Heroes

The best baby clothes earn their keep all year. Our sleeveless dungarees are one of those pieces. Worn alone in summer, layered over a tee in autumn or under a cardigan in winter, they’re endlessly adaptable. Oversized cuts also buy you time, our boxy sweatshirts and tees often last 12–18 months.

I still remember the rainbow waterproof jacket that Darcey wore from 18 months to 3 years, which then became Freya’s for another season. These “memory pieces” stick around because they’re versatile and durable.

All-year-round tips:

  • Choose neutral colours that work across seasons

  • Opt for premium-weight fabrics (like Aneby’s 320gsm ribbed cotton)

  • Look for relaxed fits to allow layering underneath

Seasonal Sleep Solutions

Sleep is one of the trickiest times to dress a baby for the season. You want them warm enough to be comfortable but never too hot. When Darcey was born in February, we used a short-sleeve bodysuit, a sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. On hot nights, we strip it right back to short-sleeve pyjamas or even just a nappy with a sheet.

Sleepwear principles:

  • Layer lightly, thin, breathable pieces are best

  • Adjust according to the room temperature (ideal is 16–20°C)

  • Avoid hats and heavy quilts indoors

Aneby for daytime naps:
While Aneby doesn’t make certified sleepwear, our baby jumpsuit in ribbed cotton is ideal for nap times on the go, soft, stretchy and breathable.

Passing Down and Packing Away

With only 19 months between Darcey and Freya, we pass clothes down easily. I box them by size and label clearly. If I’m unsure about keeping something, it goes on Vinted. Listing in bundles encourages multi-item orders and saves on postage.

Resale and storage tips:

  • Use clear, bright photography

  • Write honest fit descriptions

  • Keep listings active to draw in buyers

  • Store clothes clean and folded to avoid fabric damage

Organic fabrics hold up better for resale. Aneby’s durable cotton pieces often look just as good after a year of wear, making them perfect for passing down or selling on.

Final Thoughts

Dressing your baby for the UK seasons doesn’t have to mean a huge wardrobe. With versatile pieces, thoughtful fabrics and a few practical habits, you can keep them comfortable year-round. Start with breathable organic cotton, invest in adaptable items, and remember, layering is your best friend.
