Organic Baby Clothes for Heatwaves and Hot Nights

Organic Baby Clothes for Heatwaves and Hot Nights

UK summers can be unpredictable, but when a heatwave strikes, it’s more than just uncomfortable, it can be a real challenge to keep babies cool and safe.

I’ll never forget the 38°C day we had here in Shrewsbury recently. Even with fans on full blast, you can feel the heat creeping in. Dressing Darcey and Freya for that kind of weather takes careful thought. The wrong fabric or fit can quickly lead to overheating, but with the right organic cotton pieces and a few simple tricks, it’s possible to keep little ones comfortable and happy.

The Best Fabrics for Extreme Heat

When the temperature soars, fabric choice is everything. Organic cotton is my go-to because it’s breathable, naturally moisture-wicking, and soft against sensitive skin.

Synthetic fabrics might look cute, but they trap heat and can leave babies sticky and irritable. Aneby’s organic t-shirt range is ideal: loose, lightweight, and 100% organic cotton.

Why organic cotton wins in hot weather:

  • Allows airflow to keep skin cool

  • Absorbs and releases moisture efficiently

  • Gentle on even the most sensitive skin

Dressing Minimally While Protecting Skin

On the hottest days, I stick to the basics, a loose organic cotton T-shirt and shorts, paired with a bucket hat for shade. Shoulders, neck, and face are the most important areas to protect from the sun, so I always choose a top over a vest when we’re outside.

We’re also a family of factor 50 suncream slatherers, especially for those first few summer days when the skin hasn’t built up any tolerance.

Cooling Hacks That Actually Work

Over the years, I’ve picked up a few heatwave hacks that genuinely make a difference:

  • Frozen water bottles: Half-fill and freeze overnight, then top up in the morning so water stays cool longer

  • Cool showers instead of baths before bed to take the heat out of their skin

  • Damp muslins draped near a fan for gentle evaporative cooling (never directly on baby)

Keeping the blinds or curtains closed in the day also stops bedrooms from becoming heat traps by bedtime.

Tackling Hot Nights

Hot nights can be exhausting for little ones, and parents. We ditch duvets completely and use just a cotton sheet, or even just the cover without the insert for that comforting feel without the extra warmth.

Fans are a must, but I also position them safely so they’re not blowing directly on the girls. And as much as possible, I keep bedtime routines calm, the extra agitation can make them hotter.

Aneby Pieces Perfect for Heatwaves

When I’m picking Aneby clothes for extreme heat, I look for:

  • Loose fits (like our boxy T-shirt range)

  • 100% organic cotton construction

  • Light colours to reflect heat

The Ecru Paint Splat T-shirt is a summer staple breathable, easy to style, and just loose enough for maximum airflow.

Final Thoughts

Heatwaves are tough for babies and parents alike, but a few small adjustments make a big difference. Choosing breathable organic fabrics, dressing minimally but with sun protection, and using simple cooling tricks will help your little one stay comfortable through even the hottest UK days and nights.

And remember, it’s not about buying a whole new summer wardrobe. The right all-season organic pieces, styled thoughtfully, will see you through heatwaves and well beyond.
